Delta Delta Chapter
The Brothers of the Delta Delta Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Inc. held an event called "Bachateame" during Hispanic Heritage month in order to bring cultural awareness to the Latinx culture through bachata. We held this event on October 22, 2016 at Union South Varsity Hall. "Bachateame" is a bachata workshop where we brought world renowned Marcos Ramos-Garcia from Werk MKE and to teach us beginner-intermediate levels of bachata. In addition to the bachata lessons, he explained to the public the history and culture of the dance. Explaining its origins, development, and how it plays an essential role in Latinx culture.
Here in Madison we have a variation of cultural and ethnic groups. We wanted to create an event where we can bring everyone together from all sorts of backgrounds and be able to connect our historically Latinx culture with our community here at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Cultural Awareness: Our Bachateame event is specifically being held for cultural awareness during Hispanic Heritage month. We believe that by hosting this event to UW-Madison faculty, students, and staff we can help enlighten people about the Latinx community and its customs. Bachata and its music play an essential role in bringing people together and having fun. The educational component to our event also supplemented the understanding behind this Latinx custom. These components will make up the cultural awareness pillar.
On behalf of the Delta Delta Chapter we would greatly like to thank the Sigma Lambda Beta Education Foundation for being able to provide for our event. Overall the event was a huge success in which we enlightened the public of the Latinx culture through bachata and by also having a great time.
