On December 2, 2016, at 7:00 p.m., Sigma Lambda Beta
International Fraternity Inc. - Psi Alpha Chapter at Santa
Clara University (SCU) hosted their 16th annual 'Las Posadas' event;
celebrating the travels that Mary and Joseph endured to find safety for the
birth of baby Jesus. The event was held in the Graham Commons.
As guests began
to make themselves into the venue, they were welcome to free pan dulce (Mexican
sweet bread), Posole, ponche and Atole. Once the majority of the guests settled
and sat down, Brother Isaac Marcia warmly introduced the fraternity along with
our co-hosts, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). Once the
guests received their food and were seated, Ballet Folklorico de Santa Clara
University started their performance.
Next Brother Isaac
welcomed Professor Castañeda-Liles, who gave a presentation to educated those in attendance about 'Las Posadas' and helped them to become more knowledgeable of the cultural Christmas traditions that take place in Latin
America. The presentation also consisted of a synopsis of the
traditional re-enactment. This communication allowed for a more fluid
transition into the next set of events that would follow.
Once the presentation was over, the guests were instructed
to collect the Posadas agenda that included Christmas songs. As candles and sparklers were
distributed, Brother Isaac Marcia gave a brief overview of the various
locations where we would stop and sing. The re-enacted journey of 'Las Posadas'
began at the steps of Kenna Hall. Once there, members of the fraternity and
members of SHPE acted as home keepers that would reject Mary and Joseph
along their passage. There were a variety of songs that would be song at the
specific stops and along the way. Overall, there was a total of 5 stops; the
final one being back at Graham Commons. The guests were welcomed back to a
re-furnished room that included dishes such as Tamales and Posole. As the
guests took their seats, Mariachi de Santa Clara began their performance of
classic Mexican songs. Once their performance had finished Brother Isaac
welcomed the guests to joyous holiday music with an accompanying pair of
The Brothers of the Psi Alpha Chapter would like to give thanks to all
those who participated in the event. Professor Castañeda-Liles, Ballet Folklorico de Santa Clara
University, and Mariachi
de Santa Clara helped make this our most successful event to date with
nearly 100 people attending this year's Las Posadas. Another thanks goes to the
Sigma Lambda Beta Education Foundation for providing the necessary resources to
make this event happen.
